Medical Records Specialist
The Medical Records Specialist will support the mission of the Ozarks Community Health Center. Our mission is to provide greater access to quality, compassionate, and professional healthcare through our comprehensive health system and community partnerships.
Maintains, assembles, and files various health care records and assures their administrative accuracy; actively and consistently contributes to the department operations and communications, behaves in a manner consistent with the mission and objective of OCHC and performs other duties as assigned. Responds to record requests by assessing each authorization for completion, accuracy, and legality. Complies medical records in response to a request and sends using mail, email, electronic delivery or fax. Safeguard and protect the patient’s rights to privacy ensuring that only authorized individuals have access to the patient’s medical information and that all release of information comply with the request, authorization, company, and HIPAA statues.
Job Responsibilities
- Performs scanning of the paper health information record into the electronic record following established guidelines
- Demonstrates effective problem identification, problem solving and priority setting skills
- Communicate through phone, email and interoffice appropriately with all OCHC departments
- Assist with Patient Portal support calls, Patient Portal edits, etc.
- Understands and complies with policies and procedures related to medicolegal matters, including confidentiality, amendments of medical records, release of information, medical records as legal evidence, informed consent, etc.
- Answers telephone and answers any questions in regards to medical record requests and OCHC Patient Portal in a prompt, courteous manner.
- Processes requests out of various electronic systems and paper copies for medical records courteously and promplty from patients, physicians, hospitals, insurance companies, attorney’s and internal requests; properly documenting distribution of the medical record.
- Demonstrated knowledge in legality of various authorizations and what is required along with HIPAA in releasing records
- Provides excellent customer service by being attentive and respectful; ensures understanding of customer request and follows through as promised; and being proactive by identifying client concerns or problems.
- Performs at established quantitative and qualitative work standards to meet goals and objectives.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education & Training
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
Licensure & Certifications
- Friends and Family CPR within 6 months of employment.
Experience
- Health care experience preferred
- Clerical experience preferred
- Medical record retention law experience preferred
